KAPS to OPRA: What Overseas Pharmacists Need to Know

KAPS has been replaced by OPRA for overseas-trained pharmacists following the Australian Pharmacy Council Knowledge Stream pathway.
If you have been studying for KAPS, using old KAPS notes, or following advice from older forums or coaching materials, this is an important update. The pathway has not disappeared, but the knowledge exam at the centre of it has changed.
Is KAPS still running?
No. KAPS has been retired.
The Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences, known as KAPS, was previously the knowledge exam used by overseas-trained pharmacists. It has now been replaced by the Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment, known as OPRA.
The final KAPS sitting was held in November 2024. From 2025 onward, OPRA is the recognised knowledge exam for overseas-trained pharmacists in the APC Knowledge Stream.
What changed from KAPS to OPRA?
The main change is the exam itself.
KAPS and OPRA sit at a similar point in the journey: the knowledge-assessment step before provisional registration and internship. Both are connected to the Australian Pharmacy Council pathway.
However, OPRA is not simply a new name for the old KAPS exam. It has a stronger focus on readiness, clinical reasoning, patient care, and applied decision-making.

However, old KAPS resources should not be your only preparation source.
The risk is that older materials may not train you enough in the applied, clinical, and scenario-based thinking expected in OPRA-style preparation.
